How Many Contacts do I have on my iPhone

If you’re like most iPhone users, you probably have a lot of contacts on your device. But how many contacts do you have? And where can you find that information? This blog post will show you two ways to find out how many contacts are on your iPhone.

Not sure how many contacts are there on your iPhone? You’re not alone. Many people transitioning to the Apple ecosystem or holding a mobile for the first time (especially the elderly) face this problem.

So how can you get the total number of contacts on your iPhone? The easiest way is to use the Contacts app of the iPhone and select all contacts. The number of contacts selected would translate to the number of contacts on your iPhone.

But this figure might not be correct in some cases. You may either have more or fewer contacts stored on the iPhone. Continue reading to learn more.

All the numbers on your iPhone are saved in the Address book. It is a centralized database that stores the contact numbers of other users. As you keep adding more and more users, the database keeps getting bigger.

You can check the exact number of contacts on your phone at any time. And there are two ways to do that.

  • Use the Contacts app

The contacts app is the go-to app for everything related to managing contacts. Use it to add, update, or delete a user along with the phone number. You can also add other details like photos, organization they’re associated with, and email addresses.

If you’re new to the Apple ecosystem and the Contacts app, you should know how to add and/or manage contacts.

With that said, here are the steps you need to take to find out the number of contacts on your iPhone:

  • Open the Contacts app by clicking on the Green handset icon at the bottom
  • Go to All Contacts
  • Scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen. You’ll see a number indicating the number of contacts there are in the address book

This number will change as you add or delete a contact. Whenever you need to know the exact number of contacts, come into this section and check the figure.

  • Use the Settings app

There’s another way to check the number of contacts saved on your iPhone. And that is through the Settings app. The app is used for configuring your iPhone. It also has access to the address book.

To check the total number of contacts on the iPhone through the Settings app, here are the steps involved:

  • Open the Settings app
  • Go to General > Usage > Manage Contacts (scroll down to find the Usage option)
  • It lists the total number of contacts on your iPhone

As you update the contacts, this figure gets updated in consequence.

View the Number of Contacts on Mac

Apple devices are known for staying inter-connected with each other. You get access to files and services on all Apple devices. And that’s the case with contacts too. You create and save a contact on your iPhone and then can access it on a Mac or Apple Watch.

The service that makes it happen is iCloud. It syncs the address book across all of the connected devices. When you add a contact on iPhone, it is reflected on Mac and vice versa.

To view the total number of contacts you have from your Mac, follow the steps:

  • From the Dock, open Contacts, which is like a brown colored file
  • From the list of options, click on ‘See all Contacts’

It will show you all the contacts you have on your Mac. But this figure might not be the same as the one on iPhone.

That’s because Mac would compile the contacts from different accounts into one list. So it’d include the contacts synced from Gmail, Yahoo, and other address books.

Find Hidden Contacts on iPhone

iPhone allows you to hide contacts you don’t want others to see or access.

Hidden contacts are not listed in the address book. Therefore, they don’t get counted. To access these contacts, you have to unhide them.

The way you hide contacts on your iPhone is by using iCloud. First, you have to create a Group and add contacts to this group. Then, clicking on Contacts > Groups > Hide All Contacts would make the contacts invisible on the iPhone.

When you go to the Contacts app, you won’t find those users. While users outside of the group will stay unaffected.

You have to return to the Group and click on ‘Show All Contacts’ to view the hidden contacts. Doing so will unhide the contacts.

Go to the Contacts app, and you’ll see a different number. This is the total number of contacts you have on your iPhone, plus the contacts that were hidden.

Why are there duplicate contacts?

Many Apple users have reported duplicate contacts on their iPhones. It’s when one contact is listed twice. Needless to say, the Contacts app will count it twice.

There are multiple reasons for duplicate contacts. In most cases, it’s the result of syncing with two or more services. For example, if you’ve enabled both iTunes and iCloud syncing and have contacts in common, they will get duplicated.

Syncing between iCloud and an email client like Gmail is another common reason.

To get an accurate figure on the total number of contacts, get rid of duplicate contacts. You can remove the contacts manually. Click on the extra contact, then Edit and lastly ‘Delete’ to remove it. Understandably, this process is time-consuming.

To speed up the process, you need to get on your Mac. Open the Contacts app and click on Cards. Then, tap on the ‘Look for Duplicates’ button. It’d reveal the number of duplicate contacts you have on iCloud. Remove the duplicates by clicking on the ‘Merge’ button.

Now, when you check the number of contacts on the iPhone, the figure would have reduced.

Checking the total number of contacts on your iPhone is easy. If you were having trouble finding it, now you know what to do.

That being said, iCloud only allows up to 50,000 contacts. So keep the address book updated and remove the ones no longer active.
